Netters Compete in MWC Individual Tournament

Box Score Beloit College was represented by six student-athletes competing in the 2019 Midwest Conference Individual Championships in Madison Saturday and Sunday.

Competition opened Saturday with doubles play wrapping up followed by the conclusion of singles play Sunday. Kiri Youngquist, Priya Heinen, Hayden Lamphere, Emma Hahn, Makayla Jo Zundel and Jamie Kelly represented the Buccaneers in singles play. The same six also paired up for the doubles competition. 

At number one singles, tenth-seeded Kiri Youngquist dropped her opening match to Hannah Ryback (Ripon), seeded seventh, 6-2, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Youngquist was topped by Knox's Bhumika Gupta, the eventual consolation champion. Heinen was seeded seventh at number two singles for the Bucs. She defeated tenth-seeded MacKenzie Warner of Ripon College 6-1, 6-2 before falling to the number two seed Tebasto Duba of Lake Forest who ended up finishing as the runner-up.

At number three singles, Lamphere, seeded eighth, bested Ripon's Faith Nelson 6-1, 6-2 but fell to eventual champion and top seeded Ali Hickey of Grinnell in the next match. Seventh-seeded Hahn for Beloit topped Knox's tenth-seeded Grace Kostopoulos 6-3, 6-1. She fell to the number two seed and runner up from Lake Forest, Tyranny Miller, in the next round. 

Zundel, the eighth seed, also won her opening match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Madison Rostollon of Ripon before falling to the top seed and number five singles champion Izzy Green of Grinnell. At number six singles, Kelly, seeded seventh, came out on top of a hard fought battle against the tenth seed Miranda Zuckerman of Knox 6-4, 7-5. She dropped her next round match to the number two seed, Emma Gaydos, from Grinnell. 

Pairing up for doubles competition Saturday, Youngquist teamed with Heinen at number one doubles, Lamphere and Hahn represented Beloit at number two doubles and Zundel and Kelly made up the Bucs' number three doubles pairing. 

Youngquist and Heinen went 0-2 on the day. Seeded eighth, the pair fell to the number nine seed, Ryback and Tamera Holland of Ripon, 8-3. The duo was narrowly edged in their consolation match, 8-6, to the eventual consolation champions, Lauren Paulson and Hannah Swajanen from St. Norbert. 

Lamphere and Hahn, also seeded eighth, took down the number nine seed from Ripon, Warner and Nielsen, 8-2. The Bucs' number two doubles team then fell to the top-seeded Grinnell duo of Sabrina Tang and Sophia de los Reyes who went on to win the title. 

Zundel and Kelly advanced with a win in their opening round matchup defeating the number nine seed, Laurel Stugart and Jamahra Richardson of Knox, 8-6. Beloit's combination fell in the next round to the eventual runner-up and top-seeded team from Lake Forest, Gould and Wegrecki.
