Biography

In 1977, I was hired as the Head Football Coach at Beloit College.  At that time, the College was facing many challenges.  In addition, most sports teams were really struggling.  Men's basketball was the only exception.

I have always believed that inter-collegiate athletics can provide the opportunity, through preparation and competition, to teach life lessons.  These lessons are accepted and utilized much more readily in a successful program.

Because of the outstanding teams coached by Dolph Stanley and Bill Knapton, we knew success was possible at Beloit College.

Through the years as football coach and athletic director, we used Bill's great success in men's basketball and our new powerhouse, women's basketball program, as great examples for all of our teams.

Our entire athletic program was based on graduating young men and women who were well prepared to face the challenges ahead. I will always be grateful to men's and women's basketball for setting the standard!
