The men’s and women’s basketball programs at Beloit College have always been one of the greatest examples of what all of our sports aspire to be and what Beloit College is capable of doing for its students. There is a long list of benefits the basketball programs have brought to the College but I would like to focus on two very important ones. Firstly, the tradition of success they’ve built and how this impacts our current athletes and secondly, the lifelong relationships that have been built between teammates of these winning teams.

The 50-year history of winning with the men’s basketball team and the more recent history of winning with the women’s team make these teams two of the most successful teams in the history of Beloit College. This history and tradition is extremely important for not only those players who won championships but also very important for our current athletes. To be a part of this tradition helps each current athlete understand that they’re a part of something bigger than themselves and their team. As they work hard and compete, they need to know they have enormous support from alumni and an expectation that we’ll continue this successful tradition.

From the moment I arrived at Beloit, whether at alumni games, College events such as the Buc Open, or with the 1889 Council, when teammates from these two teams see each other there is a bond and friendship that is like no other. The relationships that have been built through competition and success are so special and can be seen in the smiles when they greet each other and how they tell stories reliving the bus trips, big games, and championship winning shots.

One of the main reasons for the success of these two programs has been the ability of the coaches and players to fully embrace the NCAA Division III model of a true student-athlete. The top priority of everyone involved in these programs has always been, and continues to be, the academic success of our student-athletes. Embracing this priority has given our coaches the opportunity to recruit outstanding students who bring their intelligence and commitment to success to the court. But these student-athletes have also brought their skills from basketball, such as a strong work ethic and ability to work within a team, to the classroom which has enhanced their ability to achieve academic success. Beloit College believes that involvement in athletics and success on the field or court is an integral part of their experience and enhances their ability to fulfill the mission of the College. It is not surprising that our basketball alumni have reached extraordinary heights in the fields of Education, Business, Finance, Journalism, and Law.
