Beloit College is where I became a mature adult. I came from a Chicago culture and the small school atmosphere of a close-knit academic community appealed to me. It was a critical factor in my development.
I came to Beloit at midyear and luckily met Frank McClellan in Speech class. He asked me if I was going out for Basketball and I said to myself "Gee I am as tall as him, why not". Maybe, because I was tall, Bill Knapton called me his "Project". Back in the early sixties in our league 6' 8" was the tallest center, today he would be a point guard. He worked with me and built my self-esteem.
An old cliché, “I wanted to be a big fish in a small pond, not a little fish in a big pond" describes my attitude. Coach Bill Knapton and the basketball program at Beloit gave me this opportunity. I was a raw talent and he took the time and energy to enhance the talent that I had to its fullest potential, eventually, becoming Co-Captain and All Conference. Coach Knapton did what was best for me and for the team. I truly appreciate his effort.
Even today I have close ties with the fellow students I met at school, a camaraderie that I will treasure forever.
