Bucs Blanked by Maroons on the Gridiron

The Beloit College football team fell to the University of Chicago 63-0 at Strong Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Battling a drove of injuries the Buccaneers were unable to stop a surging Maroons offense.

The Bucs top defensive series came in the first Chicago series of the game. After Andy Berlin's kick caromed into the endzone for a touchback, the Maroons' opening drive started on their own 25. Beloit bounced back after two big gains on Chicago's first two plays with a fumble recovery. The Maroon back was unable to secure the handoff and Beloit's Pat Nicolas jumped on the loose ball to take over possession.

The Buccaneer defense also cut Chicago's next drive short. After a 51-yard scamper was called back due to holding, the Bucs held the Maroon's to their half of the field forcing a punt from midfield.

Chicago's next three drives ended in the endzone making it 21-0 after the first quarter. The Maroons would match that in the second quarter heading into the lockerroom with a 42-0 lead.

The Bucs registered their best offensive possession of the game in the second half. After a mishandled punt was blocked by Ethan Hansen and recovered by Chicago at Beloit's 47, short of the first down marker, the Bucs had good field position after the turnover on downs. Marcos Camacho opened the drive with a 19-yard-strike to Abraham Quijas taking Beloit down to the Chicago 27.

Hansen was tapped for the carry on the next play and broke through the line for a 12-yard gain followed by another three-yard plunge to take the Bucs down to the Maroons' 12. Three plays later, facing a fourth and six, Camacho dropped back to pass and, as the pocket broke down, took off picking up the first down with his legs on a nine-yard keeper down to the Chicago two.

Three consecutive incomplete passes and a rush that was blown up at the line kept the Bucs off the board.

The Buccaneers will look to bounce back on the road next Saturday in Appleton, Wisconsin. Beloit will take on Lawrence with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
