Bucs Hold on for Win over Macalester

Tristan Shoup and Andrew Walters combined for 36 points as the Beloit College men's basketball team registered their first win of the season, a 74-65 victory of Macalester on the road.

The Buccaneers gained the early lead and held it much of the second half, leading by as much as nine, 28-19, with less than six minutes remaining on a Logan Maulick three-pointer. The Scots whittled away at that lead and tied it up at 32 on a three as the final seconds of the half ticked away.

Macalester reclaimed their first lead since the opening bucket of the game at the 18:42 mark of the second half. The Scots would extend their lead to as much as six, 51-45 with less than 12 minutes to go and by four, 63-59 at the six-minute mark. The Bucs responded with 11 straight to reclaim the lead 70-63 on a Darin Empereur jumper from behind the arc with 1:31 left in the game.

Two free throws by Macalester cut the lead to five with more than a minute to play but the Scots were forced to foul and Beloit made their final four from the charity stripe to seal the 74-65 win.

Beloit shot 48-percent from the floor in the game while the Bucs' defense held the Scots to just 37-percent. The Bucs also dominated the battle on the boards outrebounding Macalester 47-32.

Shoup led all players with 19 points and added seven boards and three assists. Walters tallied the double-double with 17 points on 7-of-10 from the floor and 14 rebounds. He added four assists and three steals in the game.

Matthew Miller and Mylan Walters also made it into double digits scoring with ten points each and combined for six assists.

The Buccaneers will return to Beloit to host Marian University (Wis.) November 20. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Flood Arena.
