The Beloit College volleyball team swept Rockford University 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) in the Bucs' final match in a five-match homestand.
The Buccaneers jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the match before the Regents began to slowly work their way back into the first set. Beloit held off the Rockford surge to take the first set 25-20.
Set two was much like the first with the Bucs taking a 12-4 lead before the Regents again worked their way back into the set. This time Rockford was able to tie the set at 20-20 forcing the Bucs to battle for the win. That's exactly what they did taking set two 25-23 bolstered by Christy Melton's four kills in seven attempts without committing an error.Â
The third set was a back-and-forth battle from the get go with each team trading small runs until Payton Carlock sparked the Buccaneers at the service line leading Beloit on a 7-0 run to take a 22-19 lead. The Regents responded to knot the set at 22-22 but two Amanda Baran kills and an ace from Paige Wimbrow sealed the win 25-23 for the Bucs.
Eva Laun-Smith led Beloit offensively with 10 kills while Carlock held down the backcourt defensively with 16 digs. Wimbrow and Melton each tallied three block assists and Wimbrow set up her hitters for 28 assists in the match.Â
The Bucs will head on the road for three straight matches including Friday night at Illinois College followed by a Saturday meeting at Knox College and back to Illinois Tuesday to meet Lake Forest College. Beloit's final home match is slated for Friday October 26 at 7 p.m. against St. Norbert.
