Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kline Joins 1,000-Point Club in Bucs' Loss to Ripon

Senior guard Shelby Kline scored her 1,000th career point but the Beloit College women's basketball team fell to Ripon, tied for the lead in the Midwest Conference standings, 65-59 in Flood Arena Wednesday night.

Kline needed just four points coming into the game to reach the milestone and she hit it less than three minutes into the game. After an old-fashioned three-point play to open the scoring for the Buccaneers, Kline nailed a jumper with 7:34 on the clock to push her into the 1,000-point club, the 16th in Beloit College women's basketball history to earn the achievement.

That jumped gave the Bucs a 7-2 lead but an offensive drought had Beloit scoreless over the next four minutes as Ripon went on a 10-0 run. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter and the Red Hawks held a 17-13 advantage after one period of play.

The Bucs stayed close through the second quarter but never regained the lead heading into the locker room down 33-27.

The third quarter was much like the second except Beloit outscored Ripon by two, 13-11 to head into the final quarter facing a 44-40 deficit.

The Red Hawks extended the gap to eight at the 6:16 mark, 51-43, but the Bucs did not fold. They responded with a 7-1 run to pull within two, 52-50, with less than four minutes to go. The margin would hit two again as the teams traded buckets making it 54-52 with 3:12 on the clock but that's as close as Beloit would come. Ripon made 7-10 from the charity stripe in the closing minutes to seal the game.

Kline led the Buccaneers with 16 points moving into 15th in the program record book with 1,012 career points. She added a game-high three steals and shared game-high assist honors with teammate Lauren Glaser, each tallying four in the contest.

Candace Cunningham added 14 points and led Beloit with eight rebounds adding three assists and two steals. Kelly McLean pitching in 12 adding seven rebounds and three assists.

The Bucs head on the road for three straight visiting Lawrence January 19 followed by a weekend in Illinois as Beloit takes on Knox on January 25 followed by Illinois College on January 26.
