The Beloit College women's basketball team played a great second and third quarters but Grinnell dominated the bookends as the Pioneers topped the Bucs 58-52 in Grinnell, Iowa Thursday evening. The contest was originally scheduled to be played Wednesday evening in Beloit but the dangerously cold weather caused officials at Beloit to close the campus Wednesday and Thursday. The teams were able to make arrangements to flip-flop their home and away games so Beloit made the trek to Grinnell Thursday and the Pioneers will come to Flood Arena on February 13.
The Buccaneers bounced back from an early deficit to claim the lead in the second quarter. Trailing by eight, 16-8, with less than 30 seconds left in the first period of play, Candace Cunningham made good on two opportunities from the free throw line to open a 12-0 run. Cunningham capped the spurt with a jumper at the 6:33 mark of the second quarter that gave Beloit a 20-16 advantage.
The Pioneers responded with a 7-0 run to reclaim the lead 23-20 and the teams traded baskets the rest of the half leading to a one point, 28-27, Buccaneer edge at the intermission.
The third stanza was relatively even. The Bucs pushed the margin to five on multiple occasions and held a four-point lead heading into the final period of play, 47-43.
Beloit's offenses went cold in the final quarter mustering just five points while Grinnell mounted the comeback win with 15.
The Bucs shot just 27-percent (15-56) from the floor and 77-percent (17-22) from the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 41-percent (24-59) from the field and 50-percent (5-10) from the charity stripe. Efficiency from long range was nearly identical between the two squads.
Shelby Kline tied for game-high honors with 19 points on 7-15 from the floor adding three assists and eight rebounds. Cunningham notched a double-double with 16 points including a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line and 12 boards.
Next Up: The Bucs head to Lake Forest for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Foresters Saturday.
