Candace Cunningham was just one steal shy of a triple double in leading the Beloit College women's basketball team to a 66-50 win over Illinois College. The Buccaneers improve to 3-10 and 2-4 in Midwest Conference action while the Lady Blues fall to 6-8 and 2-5 in league play.
Cunningham led all scorers with 21 points, posted a game-high 14 rebounds and tallied another game-high with nine steals in the game.
The Lady Blues and Bucs traded buckets on the first three possessions of the game leading to a 7-7 tie with 4:57 left in the first quarter before the Bucs went on a 9-2 run to finish the period to lead 16-9.
Illinois College whittled the lead down to one twice in the second quarter but Beloit maintained the lead throughout heading into intermission with a 31-27 advantage.
The Bucs dominated the second half outscoring the Lady Blues 35-23. After leading 43-34 heading into the fourth quarter, Beloit was able to extend the lead into double figures courtesy of free throws late in the contest.
Beloit outshot the Lady Blues 38% (25-66) to 33% (20-61) from the floor, 40% (4-10) to 12% (2-17) from three-point range and 75% (12-16) to 53% (8-15) from the charity stripe.
In addition to Cunningham's double-double, Shelby Kline posted 13 points and added three assists and Kelly McLean contributed 12 points. Lauren Glaser dished out a game-high five assists.
Next Up: The Bucs head north for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with St. Norbert College on Tuesday, January 8.
