Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bucs Top Rams in Season Finale

The Beloit College men's basketball team defeated Cornell College 76-66 on the road in the 2018-19 season finale. The Buccaneers wrap up the season with an 8-17 overall and a 6-12 mark in Midwest Conference play.

The Bucs' offense was bolstered by 17 points on five three-pointers from Darin Empereur in the first half. Second chance opportunities were also key for Beloit in the win. The Bucs outrebounded the Rams 43-35 and outscored their opponent in second chance points 19-4 in the game.

Empereur had the hot hand from the jump. With the score 3-2 in favor of Cornell less than two minutes in, Empereur hit back-to-back threes in 22 seconds to give the Bucs the lead. Dan Babb capped the back-and-forth first half with long range jumper for three of his 11 points in the period to send Beloit into the intermission with a 39-32 advantage.

Empereur hit another three to open scoring in the second half to push the lead into double figures. A 10-0 run over the next few minutes widened the gap to 18, 52-34, with just over 16 minutes to play.

The Rams responded with a 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to six with under 15 to play but the Bucs' lead would hover near double figures the rest of the way.

Babb led Beloit with 23 points bolstered by a 9-12 performance from the charity stripe. Empereur ended with 22 including six three-pointers and added a team-high four assists. Mason Jones and Matthew Miller added double digit points for the Bucs with 12 and 10 respectively. Andrew Walters led all players with 17 rebounds.

The Midwest Conference Tournament field has been set. St. Norbert goes into the tournament weekend (Feb. 22-23) as the top seed followed by Grinnell, Lake Forest and Monmouth.
