Diamond-Dwellers Take Two in Winter Haven

The Beloit College baseball team swept SUNY-Polytechnic in a pair of games at the Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida Friday afternoon. The Bucs topped the Wildcats 16-6 and 5-4 in the two seven-inning contests.

The Buccaneers scored in five of the seven innings in the opener including posting multiple runs in three innings. James Wickers' RBI single to right center plated Nick Schmidt for the first run of the game in the top of the first. Schmidt's RBI single in the top of the second opened five-inning frame for Beloit. Wicker was struck by a pitch for another RBI, a wild pitch plated the third of the inning, a passed ball brought the fourth in and Jalen Davis' single up the middle gave Beloit a 6-0 advantage.

SUNY-Polytechnic posted two runs in the bottom of the inning before the Bucs plated one more in the top of the third on Drew Freitag's RBI groundout. That's all Beloit would need for the win but the Bucs added four insurance runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Three Buccaneer hitters posted multiple hits in the game including two from Schmidt, Wicker and Terrence Cribbs each.

Connor McCloskey struck out five, walked two and allowed one earned run while scattering five hits across six innings of work to register the win.

In the nightcap, the Bucs took the early lead as Ethan Conley drove in the first score of the game on an RBI single to right field.

The Wildcats responded in the top of the second but Beloit would answer to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the third. Mitch Campbell's long fly ball to center field was deep enough to plate Wicker from third to make it 2-1 Beloit.

SUNY-Poly plated two in the fourth to take the lead but once again, Beloit had the offensive answer. Bronson Balholm's single to center field in the bottom of the fifth plated Davis and knotted the game 3-3. Schmidt put the pressure on the defense attempting to swipe second and drawing an errant throw that allowed both Freitag and Schmidt to touch home to give Beloit a 3-5 advantage.

The Wildcats would pull to within one in the top of the seventh but the Bucs held them off for the win.

Wicker and Conley tallied two hits apiece in the game. David Harrison picked up the win in one inning of relief while Keith Haina picked up the save.
