The Beloit College baseball team split a twinbill at Knox College in Galesburg Saturday. The Buccaneers topped the Prairie Fire 10-6 in the opener before falling 9-4 in the nightcap.
The Bucs' win in game one was bolstered by a five run fifth inning and a quick start after plating three in the top of the first.
Nick Schmidt led off the game with a single. Garrison Ferone made it back-to-back hits with a single and the pair advanced into scoring position on a groundout. Another groundout plated the first run and moved Ferone 90 feet away. A Prairie Fire miscue plated one more and James Wicker came around to score on Mitch Campbell's triple that made it 3-0 Beloit.
Knox plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Bucs would come back with five in the fifth. Schmidt was the spark once again drawing a walk to lead off the inning and an error by the pitcher allowed him to advance all the way to third. Ferone's single made it 4-2 Bucs. Jalen Davis followed with a walk and Wicker loaded the bases with a one-out base on balls. A wild pitch brought the Bucs' second run of the inning to the plate. Bronson Balholm tagged a double that scored two and another Knox error had Balholm reaching third. Terrence Cribbs drew the walk and the Prairie Fire's third miscue of the inning made it 8-2 Bucs.
Knox plated two more in the bottom of the inning but Beloit brought in one in the seventh and another insurance run in the eighth for a cushion.
The Bucs blasted 12 hits in the game led by multi-hit performances from Schmidt, Ferone, Wicker, Mitch Campbell and Balholm.
A seven-run eighth for the Prairie Fire led to the Bucs' downfall in the nightcap. Balholm notched two of the Bucs' eight hits with a 2-for-3 performance in the batter's box in the second game of the day.
On Deck: The Bucs will head to Wisconsin Lutheran for a rescheduled twinbill Wednesday, March 27. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:30 p.m.
