Bucs Erupt for Big Win at Edgewood

The Beloit College baseball team broke out late in the game scoring 13 runs in the final three innings en route to a 17-3 win over Edgewood Tuesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers scored in five of the nine innings bolstered by a six-run seventh posting 14 hits as 20 Bucs saw action in the contest.

Beloit got their offense going in the top of the second but the runs came courtesy of an Eagle miscue. Bronson Balholm led off the inning with a double to right center. A couple batters later, Austin De La Cruz drew a two-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Nick Schmidt popped it up and with two outs the runners were flying, the popup was mishandled and both runners crossed the plate to give Beloit a 2-0 lead.

The Bucs doubled up in the fifth, after another two-out rally, as Schmidt led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a balk. Garrison Ferone walked. A double steal with two outs had both runners in scoring position for James Wicker who tagged a ball to center field for the two-RBI single.

Edgewood scored all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth capitalizing on a walk and posting two hits in the frame.

The Bucs had the answer in the sixth as Balholm, Lunsford, De La Cruz, Schmidt and Ferone all tallied RBIs on hits in the inning leading Beloit to six runs in the frame and a 10-3 lead. The Bucs added four more in the eighth and three in the ninth for the final.

Balholm led the Beloit offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate adding three runs scored and two RBI.

Luke Brennan got the start and the win scattering five hits over 5.1 innings of work while striking out four and walking one.

The Bucs return to Midwest Conference action hosting Lawrence for a pair of games Saturday, April 27 beginning at 1 p.m.
