Bucs Fall to Rams in Season Finale

The Beloit College softball team wrapped up the 2019 season with a pair of hard fought losses at Cornell College. The Buccaneers fell 7-4 in the opener and 13-12 in the eight-inning nightcap. The pair of games was originally slated to be played in Janesville as part of the Midwest Conference neutral site weekend but poor weather in Wisconsin shifted the games to Mount Vernon, Iowa. As such, the Bucs were the home team for the opener and the guest in the second game.

The Rams plated two in the top of the first and two more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead but the Bucs battled back with a big fourth inning. Emily Stapay sparked the Beloit offense with a leadoff triple to right field. Kaitlynn Taft followed with an RBI single and swiped second base. Callie Dutton made it back-to-back-to-back hits with a single to right field that brought in Taft. Stephannie Lopez's RBI single to right field made it four consecutive hits in the inning. In the next at bat, Lopez took off for second and the throw was mishandled by the second baseman allowing Dutton to score. Ashley Lambert followed with a walk and Alyssa Morris brought in the Bucs' fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to knot the game 4-4.

Cornell responded with three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth for the 7-4 final. Beloit had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the fifth and sixth but were unable to push runs across.

Beloit posted nine hits in the game but couldn't find the timely ones as the Bucs left 10 runners on base in the game. Taft and Dutton each went 2-for-4 combining for two runs scored and an RBI.

Alyssa Boltik suffered the complete game loss on the mound striking out six in seven innings of work.

Beloit put up an eight spot to open the nightcap and extended the marking to 12-3 after 5.5 innings but Cornell put up two in the sixth and seven in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. A single run in the bottom of the eighth sealed the walkoff win for the Rams.

Beloit outhit Cornell 13-10 in the game but left 13 on the basepaths in the contest.

Madi Christine was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Bucs offensively. Taft, Dutton, Maty Nowakowski and Morris each tallied two hits in the game.
