Bucs Swept in Final Games of Ripon Series

The Beloit College baseball team fell to Ripon 7-6 after the Red Hawks walked it off in the bottom of the ninth and dropped the nightcap 26-16 in a marathon eight-inning affair. The twinbill was rescheduled from Sunday after inclement weather forced the postponement.

Garrison Ferone opened the scoring with an RBI single to left field that plated Nick Schmidt in the top of the first. The Buccaneers widened the gap to 4-0 in the fourth. Austin De La Cruz drew a RBI walk and Matthew Celentano notched a single to center field that brought in one more. Schmidt hit into a double play but with bases loaded Bronson Balholm was able to score to give Beloit a 4-0 lead.

Ripon got on the board with three runs in the fifth but Beloit responded in kind in the eighth. With two runners in scoring position, Balholm put the ball in play and his groundout brought in Ethan Conley. De La Cruz tallied his second RBI of the game with a single to center field to give Beloit a 6-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Red Hawks capitalized on a two walks and a struck batter to bring two runs across in the bottom of the eighth to narrow the gap to one, 6-5.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ripon led off with a single. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice and Beloit opted to get the lead out leaving a runner on first. A single put two runners on and a groundout advanced both into scoring position. A two out double to right center brought in both Red Hawks for the walkoff win 7-6.

Celentano led the Bucs at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and a RBI. Ferone, James Wicker and Mitch Campbell also registered multiple hits in the contest.

David Harrison suffered the loss in the final 1.2 innings on the mound.
