The Beloit College softball team wrapped up play in The Spring Games in the Clermont, Florida area with a pair of shortened games Friday afternoon. The Buccaneers topped the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg 13-1 in five innings in the opener and were ousted by a tough Mount St. Joseph squad 10-0 in six innings in the final game of the trip.
It was a bittersweet day Friday as the rest of the Bucs' season remains in limbo like many other teams across the country while others played their final games of the season this week as institutions suspend events to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Bucs pushed aside any feelings of melancholy for the pair of games Friday to finish out a fantastic week of competition in The Spring Games.
After two innings of scoreless play, Beloit exploded for 11 runs in the third. Those 11 scores came off of 10 hits aided by three defensive miscues. The Bucs put the finishing touches on the game plating two more on three hits in the fifth to all but secure the five-inning, run-rule victory.
Five Bucs tallied multiple hits in the contest led by a 3-4 performance by
Stephannie Lopez adding two runs scored and two RBI.
In the circle,
Maddy Pfortmiller was tapped for the start tossing two innings of no-hit ball.
Riley Conn came in for the final three innings allowing just two hits to pick up her first collegiate win.
Pfortmiller returned to the circle for game two holding a very good Mount St. Joseph squad off the board until the fourth. A few untimely errors allowed the first run of the game to cross the plate. In the next inning, MSJ added two more on two hits to make it 3-0.
Facing what appeared to be a shrinking zone, the Buc pitchers were forced to catch more of the plate and MSJ took advantage leading to the shortened game.
Maty Nowakowski led Beloit at the plate going 2-3.
Madi Christine,
Cora Aubert and Conn also registered hits in the game.
Pfortmiller suffered the loss in the circle to fall to 5-2 on the season.
