The Beloit College baseball team won its eighth consecutive game with a 7-3 victory over Penn State-Abington to wrap up play in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida Saturday morning.
The Buccaneer offense continued to fire on all cylinders while the defense stymied PSA. Beloit registered 14 hits in the game while stranding 12 Abington runners on base in the contest.
The Bucs opened the scoring on a
Bronson Balholm RBI single through the right side that brought in
Nick Schmidt for the early 1-0 Beloit lead. After a scoreless second, Balholm was back at it in the third this time blasting a triple to left center to score Schmidt once again.
James Wicker added an RBI base knock to left that brought in Balholm to widen the gap to 3-0 after three complete.
The bottom of the fourth was bolstered by none other than Balholm whose single to left field had
Deven Irwin and
Jimmy Yanow coming around to score for a 5-0 Buc lead.
Abington got on the board in the top of the sixth snapping Beloit's consecutive shutout frames at 26 innings. PSA added two more in the top of the eighth that but the Bucs had the answer with
Terrence Cribbs doubling down the left field line for an Irwin singling through the left side for RBIs that pushed the lead back to four, 7-3.
The Buc defense sat Abington down in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Balholm was fanastic at the plate going 3-4 with a run scored and four RBI in the game. Four more Bucs registered multiple hits in the contest.
Jacob Sligar picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. He scattered nine hits while striking out three, walking one and allowing a single earned run in 5.1 innings of work.
AJ Parnell and Wicker saw action on the mound in relief with Wicker picking up a save.
