The Beloit College softball team split a pair of games against Wisconsin Lutheran College Monday night at Sportscore Two in Loves Park, Illinois. The Buccaneers topped the Warriors 7-5 in the opener before falling 13-4 in the nightcap.
The Bucs capitalized on some Warrior miscues plating seven runs in the first two innings of game one. Senior outfielder
Madi Christine started things off taking one for the team reaching on a leadoff hit by pitch. She swiped second and with one out, junior first baseman
Emily Stapay drew a walk, her first of four on the day, to put two runners on. Designated player
Riley Conn plated the first run of the game with a single up the middle that brought Christine in from second base. A pair of WLC errors saw three more Buccaneers cross home giving Beloit a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
After a three-up, three-down top of the second, the Buc bats got back to work. Junior second baseman
Alyssa Morris reached on an error to open the frame and stole second. A single to left center from Christine put runners on the corners. Sophomore catcher
Kaitlynn Taft laid down a bunt in the next at bat but the Warrior defense caught Morris on her way home for the first out. Stapay tagged a ball that bounced over the outfield fence for the two-RBI groundrule double. Conn put the ball in play and Stapay took off toward third as the shortstop got the out at first base. The WLC first baseman caught and quickly threw towards third but an error on the catch had Stapay rounding third and easily crossing the plate to give Beloit a 7-0 run.
The Warriors plated two runs in the third, a single in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth but the Bucs' defense held on for the win.
Christine led Beloit offensively going 2-3 in the batter's box with two runs scored.
Sophomore hurler
Maddy Pfortmiller went the distance in the circle for the Bucs allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while fanning two in the win.
The Wisconsin Lutheran offense turned around in game two scattering 14 hits and scoring in six innings including four multi-run frames. The Bucs also scored in four innings but were not able to push more than one across in a single frame.
Five different Bucs registered hits in game two. Stapay and Christine combined for five walks in the contest.
Freshman righty
Cora Aubert suffered the loss in the game allowing six runs, three earned, in three innings of work. Zundel came in for the final four innings of relief.
The Bucs will head to Clermont, Florida for their annual spring trip to warmer weather. Beloit will play 10 games over six days beginning Sunday, March 8.
