The Beloit College baseball team opened the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Florida with a 6-1 loss to Ursinus Saturday in the team's season-opener. For Ursinus, it was their fourth game of the season and fourth win of the year.
Six Buccaneers registered hits in the game including five of the top six batters in the lineup but Beloit struggled to push runners across.
The Bears opened the game with a leadoff homerun to steal the momentum right out of the gate. Another extra base hit brought in a second run in the opening inning. Ursinus added two insurance runs in each of the second and the sixth.
Garrison Ferone tallied the Bucs first run of the season coming around to score on an RBI single from
Mitch Campbell in the sixth.
Bronson Balholm led Beloit offensively going 1-1 in the batter's box. He reached on all three plate appearances taking two for the team with a pair of hit-by-pitches and added a stolen base.
Danny Belling suffered the loss on the mound. He struck out three in 5.2 innings of work.
Kaiya Nishino and
Logan Long saw their first action of the season in relief Saturday.
The Bucs will face Pitt-Greensburg in a doubleheader in Auburndale Sunday. The twinbill features two seven inning contest beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
