Cervantes Boots Second-Longest FG in MWC This Season

Rafael Cervantes Jr. registered the second-longest field goal recorded in the Midwest Conference this season booting a 42-yarder in the Buccaneers' 63-3 loss to league-leader Monmouth Saturday in Beloit.

In Beloit's longest drive of the first quarter, AJ Fitzpatrick set the tone with his longest kickoff return of the season, a 42-yarder to the Bucs' 49-yard line. Silas Say was tapped for the first play of the drive. The senior took the handoff and bounced it outside for an 18-yard pickup to put the Bucs in Monmouth territory at the 33. The Fighting Scots' defense stiffened pegging Beloit for losses on the next few plays the the drive was extended on an unsportsmanlike penalty on a Monmouth defender that went for 15 yards and a first down at the Scots' 21. As the offense stalled, Head Coach Ted Soenksen signaled for Cervantes for the long field goal try. A good snap was handled by Alex Alvarez as Cervantes approached and booted from 42 out. Toppling end over end, the ball sailed through the uprights with plenty of room over the crossbar for the second-longest field goal made in the conference so far this season.

The high-powered Monmouth offense posted scores in all four quarters while the defense continued to stifle the Bucs' offense.

Jacob Shafer was 8-16 with a 26-yard long in the game. MJ Smith-Dukes hauled in that 26-yarder in his only reception of the contest. Say registered the most carries out of the backfield, taking the handoff or pitch on 14 plays.

Defensively, EK Davis notched double digit tackles including nine solo and an assisted. Three Bucs tallied tackles for a loss including a solo by Darrell Thornton that pushed Monmouth back three yards. Thornton added a sack, getting a full head of steam off the the edge on a perfectly timed blitz. Finding his way into the backfield untouched, Thornton dropped the Scots' quarterback three-yards behind the line of scrimmage.
