The difference in Beloit's 77-61 loss to Cornell College Saturday afternoon came from the free throw line. The Rams made 16 of 21 chances from the charity stripe while not sending the Bucs to the line a single time in the contest.
Cornell was whistled for just two fouls in the game including just one on the defensive end of the floor.
After jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead and then extending the lead into double figures just over five minutes in, Cornell held the advantage for the majority of the game. However, the Bucs battled back to cut the deficit to five after back-to-back three's from
Brian Rusch and
Mylan Walters with 5:43 to play in the first. Walters came in clutch on the defensive end with a block with under four to go and went coast-to-coast to pull Beloit with four, 32-28, but the Rams rattled off the next five and ended up with a 41-32 lead at the break.
Cornell led by as much as 17 in the second but a 10-point Buccaneer run in the middle of the period narrowed the gap to seven, 51-44 with just over 11 minutes to go. That was as close as Beloit would come as Cornell sealed the win at the free throw line.
Michael Myles had a breakout game for the Bucs with a team-high 15 points on 6-9 from the floor including 3-5 from long range.
Andrew Walters added 12 and led Beloit with three assists.
Mylan Walters also hit double figures with 10 adding a team-high three steals. He shared team-high honors on the glass with six rebounds.
