The Beloit College women's lacrosse team honored their seniors in the team's lone home contest of the season Wednesday night. Recognized before the start of the game, the five Buccaneer seniors were introduced in front of a good-sized crowd of students and additional fans allowed under the limited spectator policy. Beloit fell to Monmouth 9-6 in the game but playing in front of a home crowd for the first time in over a year made it a memorable night. The 2021 Buccaneer senior class includes
Sy Dragon,
Melinda Balades,
Kendra Grogan,
Seva Poitevin and
Elizabeth North.
Balades made the most of the night writing her name in the history books in her final game at Strong Stadium. Her 11 ground balls ties a program record while her eight caused turnovers is the most recorded by a Buccaneer in a single game in program history. Balades and Dragon bolstered the Buc offense with an efficient outing combining for five goals on eight shots in the game.
The Fighting Scots took the early lead less than three minutes in but Balades had the answer. Despite having a player disadvantage following a penalty, Balades tallied her first goal of the evening at the 24:11 mark.
Monmouth took over for the next 15 minutes scoring six goals while the defense stifled the Bucs' offense but Beloit didn't fold. Balades sent the Bucs into halftime with some momentum with the final goal of the half to make it 7-2 in favor of the Scots.
Fueled by a thunderous crowd of Buc supporters in the stands, Beloit dominated the second half offensively. Monmouth notched the first of the half but Dragon came back with two of the quickest back-to-back goals by a single player. Her first came at 20:58 followed by her second just 37 seconds later.
Suzanne Healy entered the scoring column beating the keeper off an assist from Grogan with under 13 minutes to play and Balades struck for the third time less than a minute later to make it 9-6.
There was a flurry of offensive spurts by both teams in the final 10 minutes but the keepers for both squads were solid in net blanking the opponents the rest of the way. Beloit keeper
Sofia Jeddeloh stopped 16 of the Fighting Scots' attempts in the contest.
