Bucs Drop Twinbill to St. Norbert

The Buccaneer softball team saw their six-game win streak come to an end with a pair of losses to St. Norbert College Saturday. Beloit was narrowly edged in the opener 3-2 before falling in the nightcap 8-2.

A delightful, sunny day at the Strong Stadium Complex, the Bucs jumped out to an early lead in game one. Cora Aubert sparked the offense with a double down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the first. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Briana Arteaga. Kaitlynn Taft followed with a perfectly placed ball in the left center gap for an RBI double to put Beloit ahead 1-0. Isabel Johnson traded places with a double down the left field line to make it 2-0 Bucs.

A defensive chess match ensued highlighted by a behemoth of a fifth by the Bucs. A Beloit miscue put the leadoff runner on. The next batter put the ball in play with a grounder in between shortstop and third on a hit-and-run leading to a single. A bunt single in the next at bat had the bases loaded with no outs. With the infielders playing in to try and stifle any chance for SNC to score runs, Maddie Moser thwarted the scoring chance with the first out of the inning on a fantastic diving catch on a liner up the middle. Moser battled the sun to haul in a popup for the second out and Zoe Landolt got the Bucs out of the jam snagging a fly ball in left for the third out.

The Green Knights started to find their stride offensively using three hits to plate two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Beloit threatened in the bottom of the inning with Arteaga and Taft each recording singles to start the inning but the Bucs weren't able to push the go-ahead run across.

A one-out triple followed by a double for SNC in the top of the seventh gave the Green Knights a 3-2 lead they held on to for the win.

Taft led the Bucs' offense going 2-3 in the batter's box adding a run scored and an RBI. Maddy Pfortmiller suffered the loss, just her second of the season, in the complete game in the circle.

St. Norbert grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the second inning of game two. The Bucs cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Arteaga and Taft tallied back-to-back singles to open the frame. Johnson put the ball in play and a SNC miscue allowed Arteaga to come around to score from second to make it 2-1.

The Green Knights used four hits to tally three runs in the next frame and added a sixth run in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 6-1.

To open the bottom of the sixth, Arteaga chopped a ball down the third base line. The defender charged as the ball narrowly stayed fair but Arteaga was able to beat out the throw for a single. Taft followed with a slick sneaky bunt that caught the defense off guard for another single. Johnson followed with a cue shot that just stayed fair down the first base line beating the throw from the pitcher to load the bases. Moser knocked in a run with a RBI single through the left side but St. Norbert was able to get out of the jam, allowing just one run to maintain a 6-2 advantage.

SNC wrapped up the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh for the final, 8-2.

Arteaga, Taft and Johnson each registered two hits in the contest. Aubert went the distance taking the loss for the Bucs in the circle.
