Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last Second Basket Lifts Beloit Past Aurora

BELOIT, Wis. - Aurora and Beloit played to a tie through 39 minutes and 59 seconds of game action Tuesday night. Luckily for the Buccaneers they got the most out of that final second, as they answered a tying basket with a winning one on a driving layup by Azeez Ganiyu with 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock. That was part of a night that saw the Buccaneers shoot 47 percent (24-51) from the field, including a scintillating 64 percent (14-22) in the second half, and 41 percent (7-17) on the night from 3-point range. They also held Aurora to just 35 percent (21-60) on the night and 27 percent (3-11) from behind the arc.

The game was tight throughout, featuring 10 ties and eight lead changes, with neither team leading by more than six all night. Neither team scored for nearly the first three minutes before Brian Rusch got things started with a 3-pointer. After the lead changed hands a few times, Aurora (3-2) took their largest lead of six on a layup by Michael Osborne. Ganiyu then ended the half in style with a pair of dunks in the final minute of the period to cut that lead to two at halftime.

Ganiyu then scored the first basket of the second half to tie the game, and he would later give Beloit (3-3) the lead on a jumper in the paint to put the Buccaneers up 30-29. After Aurora tied the score, Ganiyu and Clayton Jenny connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to give Beloit their largest lead of six. Aurora would score the next six points to tie things up, but Rusch answered with another 3-pointer to give the Buccaneers the lead yet again. Still trailing by three with less than two minutes remaining, Aurora tied things up on a 3-pointer by Tre Hamilton. After Rusch gave Beloit the lead again on a tough fall-away jumper, Julian Gatewood tied the game at 55 on a jumper with just five seconds remaining. Beloit then drove the length of the court in those final five seconds, which ended with Ganiyu's heroics on a fast break layup in the game's final seconds.

Ganiyu finished with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Rusch scored 11 points, which included three 3-pointers. Jabari Scuefield added nine points, nine rebounds, and three assists for the Buccaneers.

Gatewood led Aurora with 13 points and six rebounds, while Noah Butler added 12 points and seven boards. Michael Osborne also chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.

Beloit will try to keep things rolling next Tuesday when they'll open conference play against Lawrence University. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Flood Arena in Beloit, Wis.
