CHICAGO, Ill. - University of Chicago defeated Beloit College's football team 43-10 Saturday afternoon, out-gaining the Buccaneers in total offense by a 497-224 margin. Chicago ran for 224 yards, while passing for 273.
Chicago (3-0, 2-0 MWC) got the scoring started in the opening quarter on a two-yard run by Kyle James. Beloit answered with a 39-yard field goal by Rafael Cervantes, Jr. on the first play of the second quarter to cut the Maroons' lead to 7-3. Chicago then added a pair of touchdown passes from Wesley Gow to take a 19-3 lead into halftime.
Chicago's big third quarter started with a seven-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Gow to Coleman Smith. James added a 66-yard TD scamper before Chicago added a 35-yard field goal to take a 36-3 lead into the final quarter. Gow added a three-yard TD run in the fourth, before Beloit's lone touchdown of the game on a one-yard run by quarterback
Jacob Shafer.
In addition to the touchdown, Shafer also completed 18-of-31 passes for 211 yards.
Drake Marquez led the Buccaneers with 29 rushing yards, while A.J. Fitzpatrick led all players with eight catches for 81 yards.
Chicago was led by Gow, who completed 23-of-32 passes for 264 yards and three scores, while also gaining 37 yards on 10 carries and an additional score. James led the Maroons with 115 yards on 12 carries (9.6 ypc). Smith caught five passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
Beloit's defense recorded one sack (
Ray Kelley), while Chicago registered two sacks and an interception.
The Buccaneers will now have a bye week, before getting back on the field on October 1 at Grinnell College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
