Buccaneers Drop Season Opener At Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Beloit's women's lacrosse team opened their 2023 campaign Saturday afternoon with a 6-2 loss at Cornell College, which saw the Rams pull away late in the contest. Cornell also held a 27-7 shot advantage on the day.

After a scoreless first quarter, Cornell (1-1) struck first with a goal by Cece Zanoni with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter, which was the only goal of the half.

Cornell doubled their lead with a Meg Lewis goal in the opening minutes of the third period, before Johanna McNair got Beloit (0-1) on the board with a goal just one and a half minutes later. After another Cornell goal, McNair answered with her second goal of the day, before Lewis added another goal to give Cornell a 4-2 lead after three quarters. The Rams then added two insurance goals in the final frame.

Cornell goalkeepers Hannah Miech and Kathryn Andries combined for four saves on the day, while Beloit's Sofia Jeddeloh made 16 saves while playing all 60 minutes.

Beloit will be in action again on Friday when they'll play their home opener against Saint Mary's (Ind.). That game will begin at 4 p.m. at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
