Beloit Wins Wild Game At Edgewood

VERONA, Wis. - Beloit's baseball team stepped outside Midwest Conference play Wednesday afternoon to win a wild non-conference game against Edgewood, erasing a three-run deficit in the final innings to defeat the Eagles 19-18. The Buccaneers scored at least one run in all but two innings, while Edgewood scored in every inning except the final three frames.

Beloit (17-7) set the tone for the entire game, scoring seven runs on three hits in the top of the first. After three bases loaded walks were issued to start the scoring, Beloit added runs on a wild pitch, an RBI single from Ian Casey, and a two-run single by Matt O'Leary. After Edgewood pushed one run across the board in the bottom of that inning, Beloit added two more on a home run by Evan Zenger. Edgewood (13-8) then scored once more in that inning, cutting the Bucs' lead to 9-2.

Beloit added another run in the top of the third on O'Leary's third home run in as many days, before Edgewood slowly climbed back into the game with a four-run third. Beloit's Ryan Kopp hit his first career home run in what is his first start of the season, driving in three runs in the fourth. Edgewood then scored four runs in the bottom of that inning to cut the lead to three.

Zenger added a two-run single in the fifth to take a five-run advantage, but Edgewood tied the score at 15 with five runs in the bottom of that frame. The Eagles then took their first lead of the game with a three-run sixth. After a scoreless seventh, Brett Kiger added to his single season and career school records with his league-leading 10th homer of the year and 23rd for his career, which was a solo shot. Trailing 18-16 entering the ninth inning, Connor Vogel played the role of hero, hitting a towering blast over the left centerfield fence for a three-run homer to take the lead for good. Jack Alport (2-0) would slam the door shut in the bottom of the ninth, as he earned the win, allowing just two hits in 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, while striking out four.

Seven different Beloit players recorded at least one hit, with Zenger leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance that included five RBI and three runs scored. O'Leary and Garrison Ferone each finished with two hits and three runs apiece. Kiger drew four walks, which is just one shy of the single game school record, while also scoring a game-high four times.

Edgewood finished with 21 hits, with nine batters recording at least one base knock. They had seven players with a multi-hit game.

Beloit will get back to conference action this weekend when they'll host Monmouth College in a doubleheader on Saturday. That twinbill will begin at Noon in Beloit, Wis. at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.
