APPLETON, Wis. - Beloit defeated Lawrence 16-6 Tuesday afternoon to take the season series from the Vikings and keep a stranglehold on the top spot in the Midwest Conference. The Buccaneers also out-hit Lawrence by a 16-6 margin.
Lawrence (10-19, 6-12 MWC) scored the game's first run on a fielder's choice in the opening inning, but Beloit (23-10, 15-13 MWC) tied things up in the second on an RBI double down the left field line by
Deven Irwin. After Lawrence scored two more in the third, Beloit took the lead on a mammouth blast in the fourth on a grand slam by
Connor Vogel to center field, giving Beloit a 5-3 lead. The Vikings then grabbed the lead back on a three-run homer in the bottom of that inning.
Beloit would bust the game wide open in the fifth, scoring nine runs on five hits to take a 14-6 lead. The only other runs in the game came in the ninth, which saw
Matt O'Leary score on a wild pitch and
Brett Kiger drive in Vogel with an RBI single.
One of the many highlights of the day came in the top of the third inning when Beloit shortstop
Garrison Ferone singled through the right side of the infield for his 205th career hit, which breaks the school record, making him the new Buccaneers Hit King. That was part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate, which also saw him draw two walks, score two runs, and drive in two more.
Vogel added two hits, three runs, and four RBI, while Irwin,
Evan Zenger, and
Miles Souza also each recorded two hits. O'Leary scored two runs, giving him 48 runs on the season, which breaks a single season school record. Another milestone came on the mound, where
Aiden Phipps improved to 8-0 on the season, tying the single season school record for wins. He has won every start he has made this year.
Harvey Pena pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Buccaneers currently hold a two and a half game lead atop the MWC standings. They will be in action again on Saturday when they'll host Cornell College. That doubleheader will begin at Noon at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium in Beloit, Wis.
