BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's softball team extended their winning streak to seven games Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Maranatha Baptist, which marks the Buccaneers' longest such streak since winning six in a row during the 2005 season. They trounced Maranatha 17-0 in game one, which saw
Samantha Friedrichsohn toss a five-inning no-hitter, before completing the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap, improving their all-time record against the Sabrecats to 12-0.
The bats were alive from the start, as Beloit (8-10) recorded 20 hits in the first game, which is just five shy of the single game school record. They scored early and often, plating six runs in the bottom of the first, breaking a scoreless tie on an RBI single from
Stella Lutes.
Sydney Harbison then drove in two runs with a single to right, before Lutes scored on an error.
Paloma Reyes and
Angela Donath each added an RBI in the inning, which saw 12 Buccaneers come to the plate. They continued to build their lead in the second, scoring three runs on RBI singles from Harbison, Reyes, and Donath
Beloit scored three more runs in the third, thanks to a run-scoring double off the bat of Harbison, which was followed by RBI singles from
Jess Coppe and
Hannah Beran. Coppe and Beran each added another RBI single in the fourth, while
Colleen Quinlivan and
G Calderon also each drove in a run.
Friedrichsohn (2-3) struck out a career-high nine batters in her no-hitter, while issuing just one walk. Harbison and Coppe led the way with three hits and three runs scored apiece, while also driving in four and two runs, respectively. Donath, Lutes, and Beran each finished with two base knocks.
Game two saw Beloit again score first, as
Amanda Langford did the honors with a single through the left side, scoring Jocelyn Johnson. Calderon would add a sac fly later in the inning. Maranatha (0-6) would cut that lead in half on an RBI single in the third, but that would be the only run the Sabrecats would score all day.
Siddalee Meyers came through with an RBI single in the fourth to extend Beloit's lead, which was followed by two bases loaded walks and a hit by pitch, while Lutes also scored on an error. The Bucs ended the game in the sixth when Beran and Coppe each scored on an error with one out in the inning.
Helena Harrison (2-0) remained perfect in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four in the complete game. At the plate, Beloit recorded six hits, led by a 2-for-2 performance from by Meyers from the leadoff spot.
Beloit will look to remain hot on Friday when they'll open their conference schedule with a home doubleheader against Illinois College. That twinbill will begin at 3 p.m. at Strong Complex Softball Field in Beloit, Wis.
