Bucs Tie School Record For Victories In A Season

BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit's baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Illinois College with a 14-5 win Sunday afternoon. The win ties a school record for most victories in a single season (28), while also making Beloit the first team in Midwest Conference history to win 20 conference games in a season.

Illinois College (15-25, 11-13 MWC) scored the game's first run in the opening inning, but Beloit (28-11, 20-4 MWC) tied things up in the bottom of the second on Evan Zenger's seventh home run of the season. Tyler Hoover would later add an RBI single to give the Bucs the lead, before Peyton Phillis drove in a pair or runs for Illinois College to give the Blueboys a 3-2 lead in the top of the third.

IC added a sac fly in the fourth to take a two-run lead. That lead didn't last long, as Beloit scored six runs in the bottom of that frame. Deven Irwin started the rally with an RBI single to right, before Miles Souza crossed the plate via an IC error. Jack Alport then gave the Bucs the lead for good with an RBI single to left. Connor Vogel supplied the big blow later in the inning, smacking a three-run homer to right field, which gives him 52 RBI on the season, breaking a single season school record. Souza, Matt O'Leary, and Garrison Ferone also drove in a run for the Bucs later in the game.

Kaiya Nishino (6-3) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of relief. Beloit's offense was keyed by Irwin's four hits. Zenger added three base knocks, while Ferone and Brett Kiger each finished with two.

The Buccaneers will now get ready to play host for the 2023 Midwest Conference Tournament, which will be held on Friday and Saturday in Beloit, Wis. The Bucs' first game of the tournament will be against Grinnell College Friday at 10 a.m. at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium. They will play their second game at the same location at 2 p.m. that day in the double-elimination tournament.
