BELOIT, Wis. - In arguably their best showing this season, the Beloit College women's basketball team came up just short against Cornell College. The Buccaneers (0-10, 0-3 MWC) fell in this afternoon's Midwest Conference Clash 53-41 to the Rams (7-3, 4-0).
Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Buccaneers' effort with 8 points and 9 rebounds in nearly 30 minutes of play, while
Kaitlin Davis (Platte City, Mo.) provided an offensive spark with 10 points, including a strong 3-4 performance from beyond the arc.
Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) contributed on the glass with 5 rebounds.
The third quarter showed Beloit's potential as they outscored Cornell 13-7, powered by efficient three-point shooting where they connected on 4 of 8 attempts. However, they couldn't maintain that momentum in the fourth quarter, managing only 9 points as Cornell pulled away.
Defensively, the Buccaneers showed some bright spots, forcing 16 Cornell turnovers and recording 8 steals, with Johnson and
Kaelie Moreno (Yorkville, Ill.) each making multiple defensive plays. They also stayed competitive on the boards for much of the game, though Cornell ultimately won the rebounding battle 44-42.
Beloit's offensive struggles were particularly evident inside the arc, where they shot just 5-24 on two-point attempts. They were unable to generate any fast break points and struggled to capitalize on second chances, scoring just 8 points on 11 offensive rebound opportunities.
The Buccaneers head to Eureka, Illinois and Eureka College on the 17th for a noon tip against the Red Devils.
