Morgan's Last Second Shot Lifts Men's Lacrosse Over Centenary

BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College Men's Lacrosse team returned home to Strong Stadium today to wrap up their non-conference schedule. The Buccaneers (2-4, 0-0 NACC) hosted the Centenary College Gents (1-11) and defeated them 9-8 thanks to a last second goal by Emmet Morgan (Downers Grove, Ill.). The Bucs out shot Centenary by six, 46-40.

The Gents took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute before Ethan Scutchfield (Lexington, Ky.) buried the Bucs' first goal at the 9:32 mark in the first quarter. With a man advantage, CC broke the tie with just under five minutes left. Beloit would use a man up advantage to score their second goal as well. With 1:50 on the clock, Will Palmer (Downers Grove, Ill.) fired one passed the CC keeper off a pass from Liam Walker (Elmhurst, Ill.). At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at two.

Just like the first quarter, Centenary scored the first goal of the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead. Palmer recorded his second goal of the game in the 8th minutes, again scoring with a man advantage. About thirty seconds later, Morgan and Jordan Rice (Riverdale, Ill.) combined to give Beloit their first lead of the game. Morgan with the goal and Rice with the assist. Over the next almost 15 minutes of action, the Gents held the offensive momentum, taking a 4 goal, 8-4 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. Rice scored the fifth Bucs goal with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, sparking a 5-0 Beloit run to end the game.

With neither team scoring for the first twelve minutes of the final quarter it looked liked Beloit's rally would come up short. However, Walker scored with 2:57 remaining to give the Bucs hope. After a Centenary penalty, Palmer found the back of the net off a pass from Walker, cutting the Gents lead to just one 8-7. Walker racked up his second goal of the game with 1:17 remaining to tied it and give the Bucs hope. Just when it looked like the teams were headed to overtime, Morgan buried a last second shot as time expired to end the game in regulation and give the Buccaneers their second win of the season.

Eric Seo defended goal for all 60 minutes for Beloit. He recorded 11 saves in the win.

The Buccaneers kick of NACC play on Wednesday, April 3rd then they host IIT at 7pm at Strong Stadium.
