BELOIT, Wis. - On a beautiful afternoon for a Midwest Conference match up, the Beloit College Baseball team hosted the University of Chicago Maroons to close out the series that started on Friday, April 5th. Beloit took games one and two of the series 4-2 and 12-8 on the road in Chicago. This afternoon, the Maroons got their revenge and defeated the Buccaneers 11-9, snapping a six game win streak.
The Maroons (6-15, 5-2 MWC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning, thanks to a RBI single and two run home run to left field. The Buccaneers (16-7, 9-3 MWC) answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) led off the inning with a hit by pitch, one of five base runners that reached via the HPB.
Evan Zenger (Burr Ridge, Ill.) followed with a base on balls to put runners on first and second with no outs for
Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.). Souza came up big with a double down the left field line to score Kiger and move Zenger to third.
Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) became a productive out when he hit an infield ground ball but was able to score Zenger and push Souza to third.
Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) kept the rally going with an RBI single through the right side to score the Bucs third run of the inning. Three is all Beloit managed in the third, but enough to tie the game heading into the third inning.
Chicago regained the lead in the top of the third after a lead off double and a hit by pitch. Runs 4, 5 and 6 scored on a single, error and single. They tacked on another insurance run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Beloit orchestrated another rally, starting with a lead off walk from Tamburini.
Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) singled up the middle before
Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) put the Bucs within one with one swing of the bat. Alport launched his second long ball of the season to make it 7-6 in favor of Chicago. Following a pitching change for the Maroons, Vogel was hit by a pitch and Kiger reached via a walk to give Beloit more life. Zenger got to first on another hit by pitch to load the bases full of Bucs. With the bases loaded, Souza drew a walk and Vogel came home for Beloit's 7th run of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, the game was still tied at 7 before
Matt O'Leary (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) had other ideas. Nelson led off the Bucs' half of the inning with a double before O'Leary smashed one over the center field fence to give Beloit their first lead of the game, 9-7. The Maroons tied it in the top half of the sixth and took an 11-9 lead in the top of the eighth. Chicago shut down the Buccaneers in the eighth and ninth innings to grab the series finale. Beloit wins the series 2 games to on.
Beloit relied heavily on their bullpen for today's game. They sent seven pitchers to the mound with
Kaiya Nishino (Seattle, Wash.) getting the start going two innings.
Ben Schweit,
Micah Wilke,
Tommy Murray,
Aiden Phipps and
Harvey Pena all made appearances with Alport coming in to close it out.
The Buccaneers have a quick turn around when they head out of conference to face the Illinois Wesleyan Titans tomorrow afternoon. Weather permitting, the Bucs will head to Bloomington, Ill. for a 6 pm first pitch.
