BELOIT, Wis.- The Beloit College Baseball team hosted the Lawrence University Vikings this afternoon in a battle two of the top three teams in the MWC. First pitch for game one was pushed up an hour early in order to try to beat the rain. The Buccaneers (17-10, 10-6 MWC) and Vikings (21-8, 13-2) beat out the rain in game one, but only made it through three innings of game two before play was suspended. LU defeated BC 10-5 in game one.
The Buccaneers struck first in the bottom of the first.
Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) walked to lead off the inning and moved over to third when
Matt O'Leary (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) singled up the middle.
Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) continued to be a productive hitter with an RBI single to right to score Alport.
Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) followed with a fly out to center that O'Leary tagged on. O'Leary crossed the plate as the Bucs second run on a passed ball.
The score remained 2-0 until Lawrence cut the deficit to one in the top of the fourth. They tied and took the lead in the top of the fifth using a lead off single, a double, another single and a stolen base. Beloit tied the game at three in the bottom of the fifth.
Jacopo "JT" Tamburini (Bologna, Italy) led off with a walk and stolen base before
Riley Ponio (Morris, Ill.) moved him over to third with a ground out to short. Alport singled up the middle to bring Tamburini home.
The Vikings bounced back again in the top of the sixth and regained the lead, 5-3 and by the top of the eighth they increased their lead to 10-3. In the bottom of the ninth, facing their final outs, the Bucs put Alport, O'Leary and Vogel on all via walks. Kiger hit into a fielder's choice that scored Alport. Some savvy base running by O'Leary allowed him to sneak in for Beloit's fifth and final run of the game.
Following a quick break in between games, the teams made it through three innings of game two before rain suspended play. The remainder of game two will be played in Appleton, Wis. on April 24th when the teams head up there to finish the series.
The Buccaneers return to the field on Thursday, April 18th when they head just over the boarder to Rockford, Ill. First pitch against the Regents is set for 3 pm.
