Softball Extinguishes Inferno in Two Road Wins

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Beloit College Softball team defeated the Alverno College Inferno in an afternoon doubleheader in Milwaukee this afternoon. The Buccaneers (7-23, 2-8 MWC) narrowly defeated the Inferno (5-21) in game one, squeaking out an 11-10 victory. The Bucs won more convincingly in game two, 9-5.

The Buccaneers' offense got hot right away in game one. Lylah Murrah (North Pole, AK) led off the game with a single to center and moved all the way over to third before Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.) even put the ball in play. Murrah stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Meyers hit her own single to center to bring Murrah home. Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) reached safely on a bunt single that moved Meyers to second. An error by the Alverno catcher allowed Donath to move over to second. Savvy base running by Meyers gave Beloit a 2-0 lead with no outs in the top of the first. Rachel Overocker (Tinley Park, IL) crushed her second home run of the season, doubling BC's lead to 4-0. The score remained 4-0 until the Inferno pushed their first runs across in the bottom of the third when they cut Beloit's lead in half, 4-2.

The Buccaneers tacked on another four runs in the top of the fifth. Donath led off the inning with a double to center. Overocker followed with a single to left to place runners on the corners. Bo Everly (Waunakee, WI) came into pinch run for Overocker. Jocelyn Jordan (Beloit, Wis.) hit a two RBI double to left field to score Donath and Everly. A few batters later, Stella Lutes (Riverside, IL) traded places with Jordan for the Bucs seventh run of the game. Paloma Reyes (Beloit, Wis.) drove in the eighth run of the game with a single to right. In the bottom of the fifth, the Inferno responded with two runs on two hits to make it an 8-4 lead for Beloit.

The top of the sixth marked the second straight inning of scoring for the Bucs. Meyers led off the inning with a single to left. She was caught trying to steal second for the first out. Donath reached via a walk and moved up to third when Overocker singled to center. Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL) laced a single to center to drive in Donath. Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL) tacked on runs ten and eleven when she drove in Overocker and Witte with a double to left.  Alverno answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, making it am 11-8 game in favor of Beloit.

In the bottom of the seventh, after holding the Bucs scoreless in the top half of the inning, the Inferno started to make a comeback before the Buccaneers' defense shut them down and held on for an 11-10 win.

Witte earned the start in the circle and went five innings. She gave up five hits while striking out two. Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) came in over the final two innings to close out the game.

It was more of the same for the Bucs offense in game two. The first three batters in the top of the first all reached to load the bases for Overocker. Rachel doubled to center scoring Murrah and Meyers and moving Donath to third. After Jordan walked to load the bases again, Lutes singled to center to score Donath and Overocker, giving Beloit a 4-0 lead in the first. Alverno made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the first.

Jordan drove in the fifth Buccaneer run of the game in the top of the second. Once again, the Bucs had loaded the bases and a single to center scored Meyers. The Inferno made it a one run game after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.

The Bucs scored their final four runs in the top of the fifth to secure the 9-4 win. After Jordan walked to lead off the inning, Helena Harrison (Chapel Hill, N.C.) came into pinch hit and reached on an error. Jessalyn Coppe (Niles, IL) walked to load the bases. Hannah Beran (Calendonia, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Jordan. Murrah hit an infield single to load the bases back up before Meyers drew a walk, scoring Harrison. Donath closed out the scoring with an RBI single to center that scored Coppe and Murrah.

The Buccaneers have a quick turn around as they get set to host the Carroll University Pioneers tomorrow afternoon at the Strong Complex Softball field. First pitch for game one is set for 3 pm.
