Baseball Struggles to Tame Fighting Scots

BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College Baseball team played their final regular season MWC game this afternoon when they hosted the Fighting Scots of Monmouth College. The Buccaneers (21-14, 14-10 MWC) struggled against the Fighting Scots (16-17, 9-11 MWC) while the Scots went deep twice. Brett Kiger (Beloit, Wis.) made a comeback possible with a three run home run in the eighth, but the Bucs fell short 8-4.

Monmouth grabbed the momentum early, with a three run home run in the top of the first. In a true pitch by committee day, Buccaneer started Kaiya Nishino (Seattle, Wash.) only pitched one inning before making way for Tommy Murray (Rockton, Ill.). After Beloit failed to find a hit in the bottom of the first, Murray took the mound hoping to quiet the Scots. With the visitor half of the 2nd retired in order, the Bucs once again looked to dig into the lead. Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) and Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) both singled in the bottom of the second, but were left stranded and Beloit still trailed 3-0. Eamon Burke (Helena, Mont.) took the mound in the third inning, and after a lead off hit he induced a ground out, picked off the runner at first and got a line out to left.

The Bucs finally got something going in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back doubles from Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) and Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) scored the first run of the game for Beloit. Unfortunately, Alport was stranded at second at the end of the inning.

Monmouth added to their lead in the top of the fourth, after back-to-back hits. Again in the top half of the sixth, the Scots put together a string of hits that extended their lead to five, 6-1.

After a home run in the top of the eighth, the Bucs faced a seven run deficit with the top of their line up due up. Alport led off the inning with a single to left center. Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) poked a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. With one out, Kiger launched a ball to left center for a three run bomb and cut MC's lead in half, 8-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Buccaneers put runners on second and third, but couldn't push anyone across home.

The Buccaneers return to the dirt on Saturday, May 5th when they host Aurora in a non-conference match up. First pitch from the Ballpark at Strong Stadium is set for 12 pm.
