Football Defeats Grinnell for First Win of the Season

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Beloit College football team traveled to Grinnell for their first road test of the season. Still seeking their first win of the season the Buccaneers (1-2, 1-1 MWC) found success in the air and in their defense en route to their first win of the season. The Pioneers (0-3, 0-2 MWC) jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but Beloit closed out the scoring and secured the 16-7 win.

The Buccaneers scored their first touchdown with just two seconds left in the first quarter. In total, their drive took 2:01 off the clock and covered 34 yards. On third and eight, Bryan Casado ripped off a 30-yard run to put the ball on the Grinnell nine yard line. Two plays later, Jacob Shafer found Tommy Dixson at the seven yard line and Dixson found the end zone to tie it at 7 a piece.

Beloit's first drive of the second quarter ended with a 40-yard punt from Shafer to the Pioneers three yard line. After a defensive stand by the Buccaneers, Mitch Douglas tackled the GC receiver in the end zone for a safety, giving Beloit a 9-7 advantage.

The Bucs got the ball back with 11:27 left in the quarter and put together their final scoring drive of the game. The drive started at the Grinnell 39 yard line. Shafer found AJ Fitzpatrick for a big 18-yard completion to keep the drive alive on 3rd and 14. After carving their way to the 18 yard line, Shafer connected with Chris Moore in the end zone.

Sitting with a 16-7 lead, the Buccaneers were able to play conservative and eat clock. In the second half, they ran the ball 17 times and threw just five times.

The Buccaneers stay on the road next weekend when they head down to Chicago, Ill. and the University of Chicago on October 5th. Kick off versus the Maroons is set for 1 pm at the Stagg Field Athletic Complex.
