CHAGRIN FALLS, OH – The Beloit College's Men's Ice Hockey team (1-2-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) showcased a gritty performance, battling Hiram (1-4-1) to a hard-fought 3-3 tie in a thrilling contest held at The Pond. The game, a back-and-forth affair that saw both teams trade blows, ultimately required a shootout to decide the victor in the official record, where Hiram edged out Beloit 1-0. Despite the shootout outcome, Beloit's offensive prowess and goaltending heroics were on full display.
From the opening puck drop, the Buccaneers demonstrated an aggressive offensive strategy, outshooting Hiram significantly throughout the game with a total of 55 shots on goal compared to Hiram's 32. This relentless pressure was a hallmark of Beloit's play, particularly in the third period where they unleashed an impressive 25 shots.
The game was tightly contested, with each period ending in a tie on the scoreboard. Hiram opened the scoring in the first, but Beloit quickly responded with a goal from Hunter Nelson (Jamestown, ND), assisted by Jack Baird (Riverside, CA) and Joe Weber (Rochester, NY). Beloit then took the lead in the second period with Ben Stewart's (Dayton, OH) power-play goal. However, Hiram equalized before the end of the second. In the third period, Valerii Kneib's (Dmitrov, Russia) power-play goal once again put Beloit ahead, only for Hiram to tie it up late, forcing the overtime.
While the shootout ultimately went in Hiram's favor, Beloit College can take significant positives from this performance. Their dominant shot advantage, effective power-play goals, and strong goaltending from Mitch Taylor (Hamburg, NY) highlight a team that is finding its rhythm and showcasing promising potential for the remainder of the season. Nelson emerged as a pivotal offensive force, netting one of Beloit's three goals. His ability to find the back of the net, combined with his overall presence, was crucial in keeping Beloit competitive. Nelson also contributed defensively, registering 3 shots blocked and proving to be a well-rounded player. Stewart's offensive contributions were vital, and he proved to be a consistent threat in the attack zone, taking 6 shots.
