JANESVILLE, Wis - The Beloit College Women's Ice Hockey team were back in action against UW-Eau Claire this afternoon. The Buccaneers fell by a final score of 0-7 in a hard-fought contest.
From the outset, UW-Eau Claire's offensive power was evident, putting significant pressure on the Beloit defense and goaltender. The Blugolds opened the scoring in the first period and continued to find the back of the net throughout the game.
Madison Bliss (Fort Frances, Ontario) faced an onslaught of shots throughout the game. Bliss made an incredible 47 saves on the night, including 15 in the first period, 19 in the second, and 13 in the third. Her exceptional effort kept the score from being even higher and demonstrated her crucial role as the last line of defense for the Buccaneers.
The Buccaneer defense also worked tirelessly to block shots, tallying 5 blocked shots against the Blugolds' 21. While the team struggled to generate sustained offense, their defensive commitment was clear.
The Buccaneers found themselves on the penalty kill a few times, with Natalie Gurr (Okotoks, Alberta, Canada) incurring a penalty for hitting from behind in the first period, and Fianne Makela (Duluth, MN) called for body checking in the third. Beloit's penalty kill unit was able to prevent UW-Eau Claire from capitalizing on their power play opportunities.
Offensively, Beloit College managed 9 shots on target, with 6 in the first period, 2 in the second, and 1 in the third. While they weren't able to convert any of these into goals, players like Natasha Ludwig (Royalton, Minn.), Rachel Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.), and Tate Hutchinson (Calgary, Alberta) were among those who registered shots, showcasing their determination to challenge the UW-Eau Claire goaltender.
The Buccaneers don't return to the ice for almost a week. They host the UW-Superior Yellow Jackets on Friday, November 21st at 7:30 pm at the Woodman's Center in Janesville.
