Slow Second Quarter Stalls Women's Basketball Against Edgewood

MADISON, Wis. — Despite a hot start that saw them lead early, the Beloit College women's basketball team could not overcome a significant rebounding deficit, falling 63-51 to Edgewood University this evening at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The loss moves the Buccaneers to a 1-4 overall record for the 2025-26 season.

Forward Hailey Johnson (South Milwaukee, Wis.) was the standout performer for the Bucs, delivering an impressive all-around game. Playing nearly 38 minutes, Johnson led the Buccaneers with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting.

While Johnson provided the scoring punch, Kaitlin Davis (Platte City, Mo.) battled fiercely on the glass. Davis secured a team-high 12 rebounds (11 defensive), helping to limit the Eagles' second-chance opportunities where possible. Amaya Bridgewater (Milwaukee, Wis.) contributed 8 points, while Aina Mallorqui (Valls, Spain) facilitated the offense with a team-high four assists.

The Buccaneers came out of the gates with high energy, orchestrating the game's first major momentum shift. The Buccaneers opened the first quarter on a tear, building a 12-3 lead within the first four minutes behind active defense and transition buckets. They held the advantage for nearly 11 minutes of game time in the first half, ending the first quarter with a slim 15-14 lead.

However, the momentum swung in the second quarter. Beloit's offense went cold, shooting just 18.2% (2-of-11) from the field in the period. Edgewood capitalized on the drought, outscoring Beloit 14-8 in the frame to take a 28-23 lead into halftime. Beloit fought to stay within striking distance in the fourth quarter, matching Edgewood point-for-point (15-15), but the rebounding disparity ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.

The Buccaneers' defense was opportunistic, forcing the Eagles into 21 turnovers compared to Beloit's 15. The Bucs converted those takeaways into 16 points. However, the game was largely decided on the boards and inside the paint where Edgewood controlled the glass, outrebounding Beloit 49-29.

The Buccaneers return to Flood Arena on Saturday for a clash with the Blackburn Beavers. Tip off is set for 2 pm.
