APPLETON, WI – The ice at the Community First Champion Center bore witness to a historic moment tonight as the Beloit College women's ice hockey team secured their first-ever program win, defeating Lawrence University with a final score of 2-0. The victory also marks the first of Interim Head Coach Kelly Millins young career.
The Buccaneers, now standing at 1-2-0 for the season, displayed remarkable resilience and determination throughout the game, with their defense holding strong against the Vikings offense. While the first two periods saw a scoreless stalemate, Beloit's offensive efforts intensified, culminating in a dominant third period where both goals were scored.
The breakthrough came at 03:31 in the third period when Rachel Fussy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) netted the first goal of the game, an even-strength tally that sent a jolt of energy through the Beloit bench. The momentum continued to build, and at 14:01, during a power play, Natasha Ludwig (Royalton) solidified the lead with the team's second goal, assisted by Madi Hoffman (Madison, Wis.). These crucial goals not only secured the win but also showcased the team's ability to capitalize on strategic opportunities.
Goaltender Madison Bliss (Fort Frances, Ontario) was a standout performer for Beloit, recording an impressive 21 saves across all three periods, including 14 in the first period alone, to earn the program's first shutout. Her steadfast performance in net was instrumental in stifling Lawrence's 21 total shots on goal and preserving the Buccaneers' lead.
Beloit's defense also played a pivotal role, blocking 6 shots and effectively disrupting Lawrence's offensive flow. The team's power play unit proved effective, converting one of their four opportunities.
This inaugural victory is a testament to the dedication of the Beloit College women's ice hockey players, coaching staff, and the unwavering support from the college community. As they celebrate this historic achievement, the Buccaneers are undoubtedly looking forward to building on this success as the season begins to ramp up.
The Buccaneers return to the Woodman's Center on November 11th against UW-Stevens Point. Puck drop against the Pointers is set for 7:10 pm.
