BELOIT, WI – The Beloit College softball found themselves on the wrong side of a high-scoring affair this afternoon, falling to Elmhurst University by a score of 8-19 in game one and 3-7 in game two. The losses drop the Buccaneers to 0-16 (0-0 MWC) on the season, while Elmhurst improves to 2-5-1 (0-0 CCIW).
Game 1:
Despite a valiant effort and 12 hits, Beloit struggled to contain the Bluejays offense, which exploded for 17 hits, the Bucs tallied twelve hits.
Beloit showed early promise, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) drove in two runs with a triple to left field, followed by an RBI single by Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.). The Buccaneers extended their lead to 8-2 in the third, fueled by a two-run double from Rachel Overocker (Tinley Park, IL) and an RBI single from S. Meyers.
However, the Elmhurst offense roared back in the middle innings. Beloit found themselves unable to stop the bleeding as the Elmhurst team racked up runs and ultimately came out on top.
Despite the loss, there were bright spots for the Buccaneers. Donath had a standout performance, going 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs. Kaylee Witte (Poplar Grove, IL) contributed an RBI single in the first inning and, despite being saddled with the loss on the mound, managed to go 2-for-4 at the plate.
Game 2:
Game two saw the Buccaneers once again get the scoring started, this time two runs in the bottom of the second. The Bluejays answered with four runs in the top of the third and three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Kaitlyn Nicholson (Roscoe, Ill) led the Bucs offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, Donath contributed an RBI with a sacrifice fly. The Bucs were able to capitalize on the Elmhurst errors, scoring two unearned runs.
Helena Harrison (Chapel Hill, N.C.) started on the mound for Beloit, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing 6 earned runs. Witte entered in relief, pitching 0.2 innings.
The Buccaneers host the Alverno Inferno on Wednesday, March 26th with first pitch for game one set for 3 pm.
