BELOIT, WI – In a back-and-forth affair, the Beloit College Buccaneers fell to the Cornell College Rams with a final score of 6-7. The game saw plenty of fireworks, with the Buccaneers (12-6, 2-1 MWC) launching three solo home runs and the Rams (8-11, 1-2 MWC) hitting one three-run bomb.
Beloit wasted no time getting on the board. After Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) singled, Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.) walked, advancing Alport to second. This set the stage for Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) who singled, bringing Alport home and giving Beloit an early 1-0 lead.
After Cornell College tied the game, the Buccaneers wasted no time responding in the third. Blake Nelson (Monument, CO.) came to the plate and singled, bringing home Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.), making it a 2-1 lead for the Bucs. Kaden Gustafson (Ross, Calif.) followed with a single to left field, Souza and extended Beloit's lead to 3-1.
With one out in the fourth, Seth Brankey (Salem, Wis.) provided a spark with a solo home run. The blast was Brankey's first of the season and extended the Beloit lead to 4-1.
After the Rams tied the score in the top of the 5th, Wood responded in the bottom of the seventh, slamming the ball over the left field fence to bring home a solo home run, putting the Buccaneers up 5-4.
The Rams once again took the lead in the top of the ninth with a three run homer off the bat of Estaben Perez. Vogel stepped up to the plate in the ninth and blasted a home run to left center, contributing one more to the score board.
Beloit's pitching staff featured Harvey Pena (Riverside, Calif.) (5.0 IP, 5 strikeouts, 4 earned runs), Erick Tiegs (Waukesha, Wis.) (1.0 IP, 2 strikeouts, 0 earned runs), and Maddon McArthur (Redondo Beach, Calif.) (3.0 IP, 2 strikeouts, 3 earned runs).
