BELOIT, Wis. - In a thrilling back-and-forth contest defined by explosive offense, the Beloit College Buccaneers edged out the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon at home. The victory improved Beloit's record to 16-10 overall (5-4 MWC.
The game was a slugfest from the outset. MSOE jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, the Buccaneers responded emphatically in the bottom half. After loading the bases via walks and singles, Beloit exploded for six runs. Key hits included an RBI single by Connor Vogel (Palmdale, Calif.), RBI walks drawn by Nolan Tomsyck (Muskego, Wis) and RJ Pouzar (Hartford, Wis.), and the big blow – a bases-clearing, three-RBI double down the left-field line by Brody Bremer (Mesa, Ariz.), putting Beloit ahead 6-2.
MSOE didn't back down, chipping away with two runs in the second and one in the third to pull within 6-5. Beloit extended its lead in the bottom of the third when Vogel delivered again, lacing a two-RBI single to left-center, scoring Bremer and Pouzar to make it 8-5.
The Raiders then mounted their biggest charge in the top of the fourth, batting around and plating six runs on just two hits, aided by four walks and a hit batter, stunning the home crowd and seizing an 11-8 lead. MSOE added another run in the fifth to push their advantage to 12-8.
Facing a four-run deficit, Beloit's offense roared back to life in the bottom of the fifth. Pouzar led off with a double, followed by a single from Bremer. Jack Alport (Arlington Heights, Ill.) brought Pouzar home with a sacrifice fly RBI. Miles Souza (Carpinteria, Calif.) singled to the pitcher for another RBI, scoring Bremer. After a strikeout, Elijah Love (Madison, Wis.) delivered a clutch two-RBI double down the right-field line, scoring Aiden Wood (Chandler, Ariz.) and Souza to tie the game at 12-12.
The decisive run came in the bottom of the sixth. Bremer continued his torrid day with a leadoff single, his fourth hit of the game, and promptly stole second. With two outs, Alport singled up the middle, driving in Bremer for what would prove to be the game-winning run, putting Beloit ahead 13-12.
From there, the Beloit bullpen slammed the door. After a rocky start that saw the Raiders score 12 runs off the first four Buccaneer pitchers, the combination of Caleb Lasher (Albuquerque, N.M.), Micah Wilk (Martinez, Calif.), Souza, and  Alport shut down the MSOE offense. Lasher earned the win, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one while navigating the end of MSOE's fifth-inning rally and the sixth. Wilk, Souza, and Alport followed with perfect innings in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively. Alport needed just 12 pitches to retire the side in the ninth, striking out one to earn his first save of the season.
Offensively, Beloit pounded out 16 hits. Bremer led the charge, going 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored, three RBI, and a stolen base. Vogel finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. Love went 2-for-4 with a double and two crucial RBIs. Pouzar scored three runs and drove in one, while Souza reached base four times (one hit, three walks), scoring twice and driving in one. Alport contributed the game-tying sacrifice fly and the game-winning RBI single.
The Buccaneers head back into Midwest Conference play when they host the Grinnell Pioneers for a three game series starting Friday. Games one and two will be played Friday at 1 and 3:30 pm. The series will conclude on Saturday at noon.Â
