BELOIT, Wis. – The Beloit College softball team battled Lawrence University in a doubleheader match up at home this afternoon, showcasing resilience and offensive spark coming back to win game two after falling in the first contest. The Buccaneers fell 4-0 in game 1 and secured a 4-1 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Lawrence 4, Beloit 0
The opener saw the Vikings grab the offensive momentum as Lawrence pitcher Avery Chilson kept the Beloit bats in check. Chilson threw a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits while striking out ten Buccaneers.
Beloit struggled to generate offense, managing singles from Briana Arteaga (Covina, Calif.), Avary Briggs (Albany, Wis.), and Allison Olson (Sandwich, IL), who added tallied two total doubles on the day.
Lawrence scored two runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Gonzalez and an RBI single from Wallin-Swanson. They added two more insurance runs in the sixth via a two-RBI double by Guerriero.
Briggs started for Beloit, going 5.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Samantha Friedrichsohn (Waukesha, WI) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Game 2: Beloit 4, Lawrence 1
Beloit combined effective pitching with timely hitting to claim the second game of the day. Starting pitcher Friedrichichsohn turned in a solid performance, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out one. Helena Harrison (Chapel Hill, N.C.) closed the door, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to secure the win.
The Buccaneers broke through in the bottom of the third inning. After Hannah Beran (Calendonia, Ill.) singled and advanced on a passed ball and an Angela Donath (Wausau, Wis.) single, Arteaga laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, scoring Beran to give Beloit a 1-0 lead.
Beloit extended its advantage in the fourth. Pinch runner Taylor Martin (Appleton, Wis.) (running for Rachel Overocker (Tinley Park, IL)) scored on an RBI single to shortstop by Samantha Meyers. Later in the inning, K. Nicholson (running for Stella Lutes (Riverside, IL)) came home on an error by the Lawrence shortstop, pushing the lead to 3-0.
Lawrence got a run back in the top of the fifth, but Beloit answered in the bottom half. Pinch runner P. Reyes (running for A. Olson) scored on an RBI single to center field by Lylah Murrah (North Pole, AK), restoring the three-run cushion at 4-1.
Multiple Buccaneers had strong offensive showings. Olson and Donath each collected two hits, with Olson ripping a double. Siddalee Meyers (Orfordville, Wis.) and Lutes also contributed two hits apiece, with Meyers driving in a run.
