Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Controls Tempo But Falls Late to Lawrence

APPLETON, Wis. - In a matchup defined by tactical execution and defensive grit, the Beloit College men's basketball team dominated the majority of the clock but ultimately fell to Lawrence University, 64-58, at Alexander Gym this evening. Despite trailing for only six minutes of the entire contest, the Buccaneers (5-12,0-8 MWC) were unable to hold off a late-game surge by the Vikings (10-7,3-5 MWC) in the final minutes of play.

The Buccaneers established their rhythm early, utilizing a stifling defense and efficient perimeter shooting to take control. The definitive moment of the first half came at the 4:57 mark when the Buccaneers capped off a massive 11-0 scoring run, building a lead that they would carry into the locker room.

Led by sharp shooting from beyond the arc (50% 3PT in the first half), Beloit headed into halftime with a 32-26 advantage, appearing to have all the momentum on their side.

The Buccaneers' effort was anchored by standout individual performances that kept Lawrence on their heels for most of the evening. The focal point of the Beloit offense, Anthony Carter (Greenfield, Wis.) poured in a team-high 18 points. He was a dual-threat on the floor, adding 5 rebounds and 4 assists while playing nearly 35 minutes. Dae'Quan Davis (Chicago, Ill.) provided high-efficiency scoring, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. His impact was felt most in the lineup's chemistry, finishing with a team-best +12 plus/minus rating.  While his 5 points were modest, Thomas Glenn (Waukesha, Wis.) was a defensive titan in the paint, recording 3 blocks and 5 rebounds to disrupt Lawrence's interior game. Coming off the bench, Will Schubert (Fox Lake, Ill.) provided a critical spark, hitting two 3-pointers to finish with 8 points in just 14 minutes of action.

Beloit opened the second half with the same intensity that defined the first. At the 16:43 mark, the Buccaneers pushed their advantage to 10 points,  their largest lead of the game. At that moment, Beloit seemed poised to cruise to a conference victory, having led for over 30 minutes of game time.

However, the momentum began to shift as Lawrence capitalized on interior strength. The statistical "Achilles' heel" for Beloit proved to be second-chance opportunities; Lawrence outscored Beloit 17-0 in second-chance points and 34-20 in the paint.

The Vikings slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the game and reclaiming the advantage with just under seven minutes remaining. Beloit fought to stay within striking distance, but Lawrence's 50% field goal shooting in the second half proved too much to overcome.

The Buccaneers return home to Flood Arena on Saturday when they host Cornell College at 1 pm.
