Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey Nets Two in Loss to Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, WI – In a clash characterized by defensive resilience and flashes of offensive brilliance, the Beloit College Buccaneers (4-13-1, 1-7-0 WIAC) faced off against a formidable UW-Eau Claire (12-5-1, 7-1-0 WIAC) squad at Hobbs Ice Arena this evening. Despite a 7-2 final score in favor of the Blugolds, the Buccaneers demonstrated a "never-quit" attitude, anchored by a spectacular short-handed goal and a marathon performance in the crease.

The Buccaneers set the tone early in the first period, proving they could capitalize on high-pressure situations. While facing a Blugold power play at the 14:43 mark, George Haigley (Cockeysville, MD) silenced the home crowd of 647. Haigley intercepted a play and raced down the ice to bury his second goal of the season unassisted.

This short-handed tally provided a massive momentum surge for Beloit, giving them a 1-0 lead and proving that the Buccaneers' special teams could be dangerous even when a man down. The defensive unit, led by Jack Baird (Riverside, CA) and Ethan Rubin (Long Grove, IL), battled fiercely to maintain the lead, with the team collectively blocking 22 shots throughout the evening.

If there was a hero in the blue and gold for Beloit, it was goaltender Andrew Yocum (St. Louis, MO). Facing an unrelenting barrage of 54 shots from a high-powered Eau Claire offense, Yocum stood tall. He turned away 14 shots in the first and a staggering 22 in the second period alone. Finishing the night with 47 saves, Yocum's performance was a testament to his endurance and focus, keeping the Buccaneers within striking distance for much of the contest.

While the Blugolds managed to pull away during a difficult second period, Beloit refused to concede the momentum entirely. In the third period, the Buccaneers' persistence paid off once again. At the 14:50 mark, Nathan Hinze (Chaska, MN) found the back of the net for his second goal of the year, assisted by Ethan Rubin (Long Grove, IL).

The goal served as a final spark for the Beloit bench, cutting into the deficit and rewarding the team for a physical, disciplined performance in which they only surrendered six minor penalties despite the high intensity of the game.

The Buccaneers and Blugolds meet again tomorrow evening. Puck drop from Hobbs Ice Arena is set for 7 pm.
