Volleyball Falls to Unbeaten Lawrence

BELOIT, Wis. - Beloit, 4-9 overall (0-3 MWC) battled in stretches but could not slow Lawrence's, 12-6 (4-0 MWC) balanced attack today, falling 25-11, 25-10, 25-12 at Flood Arena.

Beloit started strong and the teams traded points through the early going. Maddisyn Adams (Stockett, MT) entered to serve, and Daniela Perez (San Francisco, CA) kill pulled Beloit within 3-5.

Beloit tied the set at 6-6 on a Selin Tufte (Clarkdale, Ariz.) service ace, one of the highlights of the opening frame. But Lawrence answered with a run, and Madeline Holthaus (Saint Paul, MN) kept Beloit within reach with a pair of kills out of a timeout, including one that cut the deficit to 7-10. Lilianne Bethards (Rockford, IL) led Beloit with three kills in the set, and Holthaus added two. Late kills by Bethards and Tufte closed the gap to 11-21 before Lawrence finished it, 25-11.

The second set featured six ties, the most of any set, as Beloit stayed in range early. Naomi Murphy (Dubuque, Iowa) answered Lawrence's opening point with a kill to tie it at 1-1, and later tied it again at 3-3 with another. Perez's kill made it 4-4, and Holthaus and Tufte gave Beloit its biggest lead of the match, 5-4 and 2-1 earlier in the set.

Murphy and Madalyn Huizel (Faribault, MN) combined on a block and cut the deficit to 8-13, a bright spot in the middle of the set. Lawrence closed the set on a 8-0 run, finishing 25-10. Murphy and Holthaus each had two kills in the frame, and Murphy added a block assist.

In the third set, Huizel posted two kills in the set, including a kill that made it 5-16, while Tufte and Holthaus each added two.

Beloit scored some of its best points late. Gina Czajkowski (Valparaiso, IN) added a kill to make it 10-20, and Cloe Hacker (Woodstock, IL), Kierra Rayne Hoover (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and Keira Taylor (Eau Claire, WI) each contributed on offense. Taylor's service ace made it 12-22, one of Beloit's few aces on the day. Lawrence ended it on a Hacker attack error, 25-12.

Beloit's defense posted 34 digs, and the team received serve at a .857 clip.

Beloit will look to rebound as conference play continues at Knox College on Friday, October 16th at 7pm.
