BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit College women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Grinnell this afternoon at Strong Soccer Field. Beloit goalkeeper Sophia Dietz (Schaumburg, IL) made five saves in the loss, and the Buccaneers created chances late but could not get on the board. Beloit falls to 3-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Midwest Conference play while Grinnell improves to 4-7-1 and 2-3-0 in MWC play.
Grinnell struck almost immediately. Maya Mozena scored in the 2nd minute, assisted by Teya Lochridge, off the first of the Pioneers' six corner kicks. Beloit then settled in defensively. The Buccaneers committed just two first-half fouls to Grinnell's five, and Dietz made her first save on Campbell Swaim's shot in the 24th minute.
Beloit's first real look came from Willow Mashkuri (Middlesex, VT), who entered in the 22nd minute and put a shot on target in the 26th, which Allison saved. Maggie Wood's (Bangkok, Thailand) attempt in the 32nd minute was blocked. Hollye Anne Brinkley's 38th-minute goal, again set up by Lochridge, sent the Pioneers into halftime ahead 2-0. Beloit trailed 4-2 in shots at the break.
The match turned in the opening minutes of the second half. Fianne Makela (Duluth, MN) fired wide right in the 45th minute and Grace Ramel (Chicago, IL) did the same in the 47th, but Grinnell scored twice in just over two minutes. Emily Roesler put away a rebound in the 49th, after Dietz stopped Lochridge's shot. Lochridge then scored unassisted in the 52nd to make it 4-0.
Beloit did not fold after falling behind. The Buccaneers put up six second-half shots, compared with two in the first half, and generated their best looks late. In the 79th minute Calypso Ayoung (Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago) forced a save from Allison. In the 82nd minute Ramel, just back on the field, tested Allison again. Finally, in the 83rd minute Mikayla Campbell (Madison, WI) sent a shot wide right moments later.
Beloit also earned a corner in the 81st minute. Allison finished with three saves for the shutout.
Dietz played all 90 minutes and made five saves, including stops on Lochridge, Caroline Novak and Nora Cheng. Novak and Cheng both shot in the final minute. Four of the shots she faced beat her, but she kept the Pioneers from running up the score late. Ramel led Beloit with three shots, one on target, and was involved in most of the team's best late pressure. Both Ayoung and Mashkuri put shots on target, with Mashkuri doing so off the bench. They were two of only three Buccaneers to test Allison. Makela, Wood and Campbell each took a shot. Makela played 75 minutes, Wood 80 and Campbell 74.
Zyana Turcios (Elmwood Park, Ill.), Gianna Clementi (Wauwatosa, WI), Sydney Rausch (Boise, ID) and Alejandra Martinez-Bates (Chicago, IL) were among the defenders and midfielders who logged heavy minutes. Turcios played 80.
The Bucs stay home this weekend when they host Monmouth College on Saturday. Kick off from Strong Soccer Field is set for 1:30 pm against the Fighting Scots.
